Panel suggests 70% weight for Class 12 marks in IIT entry

NEW DELHI: In what may mark a major shift away from the current scheme of admission to the country's bluechip engineering institutions, an HRD ministry panel has recommended 70% weightage to class XII marks and 30% for performance in an aptitude test to be conducted more than once a year, for the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination.

A cut-off list on the basis of the class XII result and the aptitude test will be prepared in the month of June every year and the top 40,000 will have to take the additional test for IITs. Right now, more than four lakh students appear for IIT-JEE in a single test.

The panel headed by Damodar Acharya, director of IIT Kharagpur, that gave its report to HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday, has also suggested that the aptitude test be an ongoing affair which students can take more than once.

However, the best score in the aptitude test -- which will have questions on reasoning, numerical ability and communication skills -- should be taken into account. It is only the add-on test for the top students that will have questions on physics, mathematics and chemistry. However, the panel has put a restriction on the number of times the add-on test can be taken.

Also, unlike the present system, right at the beginning, students will have to give their choice of IIT or other institutes -- like Indian Institute of Science Education & Research -- whose admission test is conducted through JEE. Students will also have to spell out their choice of branch of engineering or stream of pure science.

HRD sources said the ministry's first task would be to bring all state boards as well as CBSE on par with each other by developing a comprehensive weighted performance index so that there is no gross inequality among them and students do not suffer. Already, a core science and mathematics syllabus has been mooted by the HRD ministry and approved by the Council of Board of Secondary Education. "The move will ensure that students from small towns and even those who cannot afford expensive coaching can aim to be in IITs," a source said.

IITs say no to common engineering entrance test

MUMBAI: The Indian Institutes of Technology have trashed the idea of selection through a single national admission test for all engineering colleges. Instead, in a throwback to the earlier system of a two-stage test (2000-2004) to enter an IIT, an HRD ministry-appointed committee has come up with a plan of holding an "add-on" test to select candidates.

TOI has a copy of the interim report of the committee, which is headed by IIT-Kharagpur director Damodar Acharya and comprising IIT-Madras director M S Ananth, IIT-Bombay director Devang Khakhar and IIT-Roorkee head S C Saxena. They wrote the report after extensive discussion with state officials, university heads, faculty and other stakeholders nationwide.

"Scores in a well-designed National Aptitude Test should be used to capture parameters of interest such as raw intelligence, aptitude, general awareness, comprehension and written communication skills. NAT should not require extensive preparation and coaching. The questions should be so designed that it would not require inputs beyond plus-2 level," an HRD ministry-appointed committee said in its report. The NAT high-performers will then have to clear another test to get into IITs and other top institutes.

To soften stress, it has been proposed to make NAT an online test conducted throughout the year. Every students' composite weighted performance score will then be drawn up; it will be based on marks in NAT and marks each student tots up in science subjects in Class XII boards.

Web talk

With technology making inroads into institute campuses, IIM Shillong decided to webcast its first convocation ceremony on April 3. Earlier, the institute conducted video conferencing for placement purposes, thus defying the disadvantages of distance and connectivity.

Said a spokesperson of the institute, “Since many students and their relatives were unable to attend the convocation, we decided to explore webcast and reach out, which was a successful venture.”

As far as innovation is concerned, IIM S has implemented ERP system in its operations, which has made the campus paper-free, thus promoting an eco-friendly and sustainable management system.

Sustainability has always been the institute’s focus. The institute started its operations at a time (July 2008) when the financial world was beginning to crack down. With established systems across the world on the verge of collapse,
development of better and ‘sustainable’ business processes became important.

Hence, IIM S designed its courseware with the future in mind. The need of the hour in management education is to attain a balance between corporate and social welfare.

According to the spokesperson, “IIM S aims at churning out managers who can become change agents. Most importantly, the world — besides experiencing climate issues — is also facing a severe resource crunch. It is a known fact today that profits alone cannot continue to be the only aim of businesses and hence development of better and more sustainable processes is needed. IIM S aims to play a central role in such a change,” she says.

A total of 63 participants were awarded the postgraduate diploma in management (PGDM).

How to be 'effective' at work

How to be 'effective' at work(Getty Images)
Communication is the key to success in any relationship. To communicate effectively, particularly in an organisational setting, it’s vital to develop mechanisms that ensure an easy flow of information, says Sheetal Srivastava

Let us think of a corporate organisation as a human body and the various working professionals as different parts of the body and the top management as the human brain.

The entire human body functions only because there is a constant exchange of signals between the brain and different parts of the body. Therefore, for the successful existence of an organisation, there has to be well-defined channels of communication between the working professionals and top level managers.

“It is not just a matter of creating communication channels but encouraging employees to communicate without fear. We have to remember that an environment where the communication process is not hindered in any way, creates an atmosphere conducive to growth,” says Faisal Farooqui, founder & CEO of Mouthshut.com.

“In a rapidly growing industry like insurance, it is rather inevitable to have live channels of communication; both formal and informal so as to transfer critical messages top-down and bottom-up,” notes Rajendra Ghag, executive VP HR and administration, HDFC Standard Life.

HDFC Standard Life has their annual ‘Sparsh’ meetings where all employees of each of the nine zones are invited for a live half day structured communication inclusive of a question and answer session. A gathering of about 1000-1500 employees are addressed by a member of the top management team as well as zonal business leaders. The CEO town hall meeting, held once a quarter addresses around 400 employees live and connects with more than 5000 employees through video conferencing.

The human resources team at Essar apprehended that there was an organisational need for a dedicated forum to resolve employee queries. In order to realise the above ambition, the HR team at Essar crafted the ‘ASK - HR’ initiative.

“An extended arm of the HR team, ASK - HR is a forum with dedicated personnel to respond to all employee queries. The instrument used for this initiative is a toll-free line, so as to ensure that ASK-HR is easily accessible to all employees, across businesses from any location. “The services of ASK - HR are applicable to all employees and trainees as well as consultants/advisors who have a valid SAP ID,” says Rahul Taneja, senior vice president and head - corporate HR, Essar Group.

“‘Voice of Wipro’ (VOW) survey; ‘Site-o-meter’ survey for site-based employees and ‘Project Pulse’ for practice-based employees of a division are forms of bottom-up communication facilitated periodically to capture employee concerns and issues pertaining to various hygiene and motivation factors. The feedback is captured, results analysed and the action plan is communicated back to the employees,” says Joseph John, VP HR, Wipro Infotech.

With employees being exposed to a glut of information, it becomes necessary for them to be able to validate grapevine, re-validate the news and hear it first from their leaders, rather than rely on speculative news.

EPASS scholarships and Fee reimbursement, New changes proposed for this year

EBC scholarships and EBC fee reimbursements under scanner...
Eligibility criteria for granting scholarships and fee reimbursement to students belonging to weaker sections is proposed to be changed as the government does not want the benefit to high earning families. Scholarships and fee reimbursement will not be granted to students whose annual parental income is above Rs. 1 lakh. For renewal of these benefits, there may be an insistence on 75% class attendance. Cabinet sub-committee held a meeting with representatives of the engineering and professional colleges. Final view on the criteria would be taken after an open debate being organized by the committee on June 22 at Jubilee Hall with representatives of managements and leaders of the students' unions. The Cabinet sub-committee would submit its report in 10 days to enable the government to propose new guidelines for the new academic year.

KEA Postponed Engineering Admissions Indefinitely

AICTE approval delay to engineering colleges in the Karnataka...
Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has postponed indefinitely the admission round for the engineering seat selection scheduled to begin on June 18 as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has not yet approved any engineering colleges in the State for the academic year 2010-2011.
AICTE has not taken any decision on continuing the recognition granted to engineering colleges, inclusion of new courses and increase in student intake. Also, it has recently sought additional information from the engineering colleges through a Web-based approval system introduced to eliminate corruption and, hence, the seat matrix has not been made available to the State government.
Admission rounds for architecture, casual vacancy round for NCC, sports and the disabled as well as casual vacancy round for medical and dental courses have also been postponed indefinitely. The KEA will inform candidates when the counselling process resumes after hearing from the AICTE. KEA has already informed students of the development through SMS.(The Hindu 18-06-2010)

Decision on engineering courses fee hike in a week time

Fee hike painful to Government too..
Andhra Pradesh government announced that final decision on hike in the fees for engineering courses within a week. The managements of private colleges pressuring government to hike the fee for this academic year. But government has kept its decision on hold fearing resist from students and parents. Any hike in fee will burden the government as 80% of the students admitted through fee reimbursement scheme. Government already owes a staggering Rs 1,800 crore to colleges under the scheme that came into force from the 2008-09 academic year. The government will take a final decision on the fee hike within a week based on the findings of the three-member committee and the proposals submitted by colleges.

Do you Belive this 14 students scores 0, How to Get Zero in Eamcet???

Only 160 answers known can put all wrong or empty sheet...
14 students got '0' marks in Eamcet this year. Total marks in Eamcet is 160 and the qualifying mark is 25 % of the total which means students should score 40 marks for qualifying. It is so difficult to get 0 marks in Eamcet. Above 14 students could easily have scored nearly 30 marks even if they had chose to blurb a single option among A,B,C, and D for all questions. This year, the pattern of exam was such that the students could have got 30 to 32 marks for selecting the ‘A’ option for every question, 40 to 42 marks if they selected ‘B', 40 for ‘C’ and 30 for ‘D’. But the 14 students did not even bother to try their luck even in that manner. The eight students in the engineering stream and six in the medical stream were so lazy that they did not even bother to blurb options in OMR answer sheet and handed over blank papers to invigilators after sitting in the exam center for full three hours as they are sure that under the SC/ST quota they are bound to get a seat.(Deccan)

India's Best Engineering Colleges

As the IITs continue to reign, Delhi retains its Numero Uno position from last year, while IITKharagpur moves two notches up to second place, nudging IIT-Kanpur to the third slot. The only exception in the IIT run has been IIT-Guwahati, which has slipped from seventh to ninth position. See top 25 colleges in Engineering

IIT-Delhi scores a first on placement, reputation, academic input and infrastructure
IIT-Delhi scores a first on placement, reputation, academic input and infrastructure
Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS), Pilani, which has rejoined the survey after a hiatus, rockets to seventh place to emerge as the best privately run engineering institute.

While IIT-Delhi ranked first on all counts like reputation, academic input, infrastructure and job placement, it stood second in terms of student care.

That, however, did not make a difference to its top position in both perceptual and factual scores. IIT-Kharagpur, with a ranking of five for each theme, came second on the factual rank, thus beating IITKanpur, which scored four on the themes but fell to the sixth place on the factual score.

The key mantra at IIT-Delhi has been empowerment of the academic community, be it students, research scholars or the faculty. While the open category, or electives, has been enlarged for undergraduates, an M.Tech programme in Atmospheric, Earth and Ocean Sciences and a diploma course in Metro Rail Transportation have been added at the post-graduation level this year.

“We have made great progress in our research outlook. This year we crossed the Rs 100-crore mark in our research funding,” says Surendra Prasad, director, IIT-Delhi.

In order to stay abreast with the scientific community worldwide, the institute updates its research infrastructure every year and has acquired state-of-the-art equipment. According to M. Balakrishnan, dean of postgraduate studies and research, one of the main factors that makes IIT-Delhi stand apart is its outstanding faculty.

To empower and incentivise the faculty further, the institute has introduced awards such as the Outstanding Young Faculty Fellowship, and offers higher travel and research grants.

It also launched a series of initiatives such as Summer Student Internship and Summer Faculty Fellowships for students and teachers from other engineering colleges.

“This gives them exposure to the IIT experience and promotes a greater interest in research and innovation,” explains Prasad.

The USP of the college is its emphasis on holistic development of the students by offering top quality education both within and outside the classroom. Perhaps this is the reason why an overwhelming majority of students takes up leadership roles in life.

“More than 50 per cent of our students become entrepreneurs after gaining some experience in industry,” says Prasad. The institute has an Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC, IIT-D), which aims at promoting entrepreneurship amongst students and building an exhaustive resource pool.

BITS-PILANI reserves seats only for toppers of board examinations
BITS-PILANI reserves seats only for toppers of board examinations
A special Training and Placement Cell at the institute will begin placements for this term during December.

The campus has its share of colour too with national-level fests like Rendezvous, Tryst and Sportech drawing students from all over the nation to participate. But IIT-Delhi can’t afford to rest on its laurels with IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Kanpur snapping at its heels with excellent ratings.

It’s BITS-Pilani, though, that has emerged in this year’s survey as a role model for other private engineering colleges to follow. Started in 1946 in the semi-arid desert region of Rajasthan, the institute has enjoyed great credibility for decades now.

Despite being a privately run and funded college, which gets Central grants only for select governmentfunded projects, it has retained transparency in its selection criteria and flexibility in the way courses are run.

Until 2004, the institute selected candidates on the basis of their scores in plus-two examinations, but when it found that a few states were taking away a large chunk of seats, it devised its own online entrance test in 2005, now popular as BITSAT.

The entrance test permits a candidate to take it on any of the 40 days designated, at any of the 20 centres across the country in one of the three shifts. This helps applicants to avoid conflict of dates with any other entrance test or reschedule in genuine cases of one’s inability to appear at a given date. In all, more than 1.20 lakh candidates appear for 2,000 seats in all programmes. Their scores are given to them instantly on completion of the test at the centre itself, which has a camera recording the candidate’s image all the while to check any unfair means. This has helped the institute to get the best candidates from all states.

BITS has no management or reservation quota and the only seats reserved are for toppers of the respective board examinations. The institute has a unique system of allowing students to decide their teachers and even timings of classes.

“Transparency in selection, flexibility in teaching and industrial training in every degree course is what makes BITS rank so high,” says L.K. Maheshwari, vice-chancellor of BITS. The industrial partnership component, which has students even going abroad for training, has BITS teachers stationed at the place of training. BITS has 150 companies joining hands for this training. Besides a strong faculty, companies like Motorola and IBM have set up their laboratories here. BITS’ strong ties with industry at various levels is what has earned it Best Corporate-University Alliance award, too.

It now has campuses in Dubai, Goa and Hyderabad also. “These are campuses of the same institute and not different institutes,” Maheshwari clarifies. G. Raghurama, deputy director, academic, points out how stress on entrepreneurship and leadership-building skills is imbibed at every stage to allow a strong decision-making personality to come up.
