HTC Legend Mobile Phone

HTC Legend Mobile Phone:
Good looking, sturdy shell
Plenty of user friendly stoical networking tools
Good audio quality
Image quality is quite clear
Handset gets a bit hot while charging or after being used for a while
The speakerphone is a bit low

There are those few instances when a mobile handset comes my way and I honestly enjoy actually using it not merely for test purposes but on a personal level. The HTC Legend was one of such handsets. It’s designed to look good, feel good and function exactly the same way. Here’s a closer look.

Form Factor
Sticking, in part, to the traditional HTC design of the ‘chinned’ handset the Legend’s body is also constructed out of a single block of aluminum. This has its benefits when it comes to style but it does tend to make the handset a little hard to grip thanks to its smooth texture. A small portion of the rear pops out and a compartment has to be opened to access the battery, MicroSD and SIM card slots. Unfortunately this is not a hot swap option. HTC has gone with an optical track pad for navigation instead of a trackball like with the Hero. The 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display sports a 320 x 480 pixel resolution and multi-touch for most features. On one side are the volume/Zoom keys and a 3.5mm handsfree socket and screen lock button are located on the top with a micro USB port at the bottom.

Irrespective of the slightly slick surface, the Legend is a really good looking handset that makes a bold style statement in its aluminum casing.

Features and Performance
Interface
With its Qualcomm MSM 7227 600 MHz processor, the Legend runs Android v2.1 fairly smoothly. The only place I noticed a slight delay was in the music player. When flipping through songs, the track changed immediately with the name following a second or so later. Other than that, accessing any and all functions; be it customizing HTC’s Sense UI to your specific needs or switching to personalized desktops that you can create using the Personalizationfunction it’s all good. Android 2.1 or Éclair as it’s called is not all that different from previous editions but it does add a little more color to the settings options and the widgets are far more spectacular than before. Sense UI is by far one of the best interfaces for mobile handsets.

Media
The music player is capable of providing clear audio at a decently high decibel level. All tones are audible at a very balanced level. I still think it’s about time Android allowed for customization of audio with EQ presets or a customizable option. The preloaded FM radio picked up signals quite clearly in most places even while on my commute. The voice recorder allows you to comfortably keep the handset at least three feet away from you and still get clear voice recordings. 3GP and MPEG4 videos including those MP4 videos formats for the iPhone played without a hitch. However, I think it’s about time HTC took on DivX and XviD codec support so we wouldn’t have to convert videos all the time. HTC’s Teeter ball game is the only one preloaded. For games, apps etc. you can download off of the Android Market. One minor issue is that the ringer/speakerphone is a bit low.

HTC Announces New Android Handset, Wildfire

HTC has just introduced yet another Android smartphone into their ever increasing range of handsets. This one, called the HTC Wildfire is looks like a smaller version of the Desire. Like all their new offerings the Wildfire will also ship with HTC’s Sense UI that allows you to easily integrate social networks with other aspects of the handset. Apps like HTC’s Friend Stream will also be on-board.

"Today's social networks provide an essential forum for friendship with more than 400 million users - many of whom are young adults - actively sharing their lives with their friends through Facebook," said Florian Seiche, Vice President, HTC EMEA. "HTC Wildfire makes the HTC Sense experience available to young mobile users for the first time. It brings all your communications into one place, whether it's through Facebook, Twitter, text messages, images or email, ensuring that you are never far away from the conversation and always close to your friends."
Features include -
  • 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen – 240 x 320 pixel resolution with multi-touch
  • Optical trackpad
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi, GPS (with A-GPS)
  • Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, USB 2.0 (micro)
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, smile and face detection
  • FM radio
  • microSD card support up to 32GB (8GB included)
  • 3.5mm handsfree socket
The new HTC Wildfire will be broadly available to customers across major European and Asian markets from Q3 2010.

HTC Smart Mobile Phone

HTC Smart Mobile Phone:
'Smart' looking device, well designed
Audio clarity for calls and music is good
Camera is quite decent
Lacks Wi-Fi for the price
Battery life could have been better
No Google Maps or chat apps preloaded

HTC has had quite a bit success with their slew of Android devices that seem immensely popular with all demographics. However so far, they haven’t really been able to tap into the budget segment i.e. under Rs. 10,000 , the Smart is undoubtedly their attempt to bridge the gap. This is their cheapest Smartphone yet and here’s my opinion on whether or not it’s worth the money and lives up to its name.

Form Factor
The Smart is a pretty sleek new handset that’s got just that right amount of weight (108g) for good balance. It’s just 12.8mm thin so it’s easy to carry around without leaving a bulge in your pocket. HTC has gone with a 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen that has a 240 x 320 pixel resolution. Although it’s not too visually appealing I have no complaints about the overall clarity even in the bright outdoors, wherever you can find it these days.

The button set up is not one of my favourite things about the handset. It has a small key just below display that’s can pull up the menus, it’s quite tiny. The large ‘Arrow’ key is for returning to the previous menu or if pressed and held will return you directly to the main desktop menu. A 3.5mm handsfree port is located at the top with a mini USB (although it may look like one) port at the bottom. The volume keys are neatly camouflaged along the chromed border and a camera shutter release is located on the other side in the same way. A hot swap MicroSD card slot is located just under the rear panel on one side.

It’s a simple yet professional looking handset.

Features and Performance
Interface

The Smart is running on a new OS designed by Qualcomm, called Brew Mobile which comes off as quite Android-ish complete with multiple desktops, full page widgets, shortcuts etc. The settings options and other subtle functions all appear that way too. Nevertheless it’s easy to manage, customize and navigate. It’s fluid and the Smart’s 300MHz processor enables speedy delivery of access to the various features andfunctions. I like the layout, it’s comfortable, however multitasking is not the handset’s strongest point. A standard mobile keypad of the virtual variety obviously is available, however you do have the option of switching to landscape with a QWERTY option as well. Don’t let the small keys fool you, if you’ve calibrated the screen properly, it’s very handy for speedy typing.

If you’re used to hitting the ‘Call End’ to return to the main screen you’ll have to re-learn that habit. The Smart’s end key will lock the screen, so you’ll have to press and hold the Arrow button to return to the main desktop.

Media
Unfortunately, just like the Android’s player, this one is also strictly play and listen with no customizable options to alter audio output. However, on the plus side, the tone quality is really good and the decibel level is high enough for you to listen to your music peacefully even in the obnoxiously loud local trains at peak hour. Playlists can be created on the device itself but it doesn’t allow for individual folder viewing/playback in case that’s how you categorize your music. The FM radio worked out really well with clear reception almost everywhere I went. It scanned and saved all available stations in about 8 seconds which is quite impressive. Video Playback is limited to just 3GP and standard mobile MPEG 4 formats. Playback and viewing is quite comfortable on the 2.8-inch display. Large JPEG files may take a little while to load but that’s only to be expected for lower end handsets.

Smartphones Under Rs. 10,000

Not everyone can afford a smartphone that’s capable of providing users with the optimal connectivity options and that integrates full PDA functionality into it. Sure there are plenty of alternatives that come close although there’s no definitive line of distinction between a standard mobile handset and a Smartphone. The handset’s operating system has a lot to do with this classification while price really has nothing to do with it. For instance Android devices and Windows Mobile handsets are automatically classified as Smartphones. Nevertheless a category of devices does fall under the Smartphone genre and they’re getting cheaper all the time.

With that in mind here are a few of handsets that fall under the Smartphone selection if you’re looking for one and you’re budget is limited to Rs. 10,000 and under.

Samsung Monte - Rs. 8,600 – Best Choice
The Monte is a stylish looking device that has a comfortable grip. Using Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz UI you’ll have the option of multiple desktops with plenty of handy widgets to drag and drop on to. Samsung’s DNSe audio enhancement feature has also been thrown in for a better multimedia experience. The 3 MP camera comes with a Smile Shot setting as well as geotagging and the Monte is also equipped with Social Networking features. It’s one of the cheapest smartphones in this category that can handle 3Gconnectivity that also sports Wi-Fi and GPS, making it the best choice for a budget smartphone.

Samsung’s Monte is also equipped with -
  • 3.0-inch display with a 240 x 400 pixel resolution
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi
  • GPS with A-GPS support
  • Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, USB 2.0 (mini)
  • 3 megapixel camera
  • 3.5mm handsfree socket
  • FM radio (recording)
  • microSD card support
Nokia 5233 – Rs. 6,300 – Runner Up
The Nokia 5233 is, like I’ve been saying, a lower end version of their once popular 5800 XpressMusic handset. It’s simple and lightweight handset that’s designed to be comfortable to use and it is. It’s loaded with features running on a Symbian OS with a Series 60 touchscreen UI. Nokia’s also included their media bar touch-sensitive key just above the display which makes it really easy to access your on-board media files. S60 handsets also make it easy to download and install apps via Nokia’s Ovi Store (preloaded) application. The handset also comes bundled with Ovi Maps even though it doesn’t have a GPS module.

Other features include -
  • 3.2-inch display with a 360 x 240 pixel resolution
  • EDGE/GPRS
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0 (micro)
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • 3.5mm handsfree socket
  • FM radio
  • microSD card support

HTC Smart - Rs. 9,990
The Smart is one of HTC’s low end smartphones and they’ve opted to use Qualcomm’s new Brew Mobile platform as the OS for the device. The OS is simple and quite like using an Android device so it’s easy to get around. Thanks to the versatility of HTC’s Sense UI, the navigating through the menus and accessing functions are very convenient. The Handset is also equipped to handle social networking for Twitter and Facebook users with HTC’s FriendStream application that has its own full page widget.

The Smart also features -
  • 2.8-inch display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0 (mini)
  • 3 megapixel camera
  • 3.5mm handsfree socket
  • FM radio
  • microSD card support

If you have any other handsets you think are contenders, dear readers, feel free to discuss them in our comments section below.

How to Check my IMEI Number? IMEI number verification, IMEI number Tracking

IMEI Number Check, IMEI Check...sample
International Mobile Equipment Identity(IMEI) number which do not have for China handsets will stop working from First December 2009 because all mobile operators across India are asked The Department of Telecommunication to stop services to such handsets. What is an IMEI number?
• IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is unique 15 digit identification number of the Mobile Handset. It is like the registration number of your vehicle. No two mobile handsets in the world should have the same IMEI number. IMEI number is an important tool for the handset tracking. IMEI numbers are being allotted by five bodies authorized by GSMA. From IMEI number one can identify the make and model of the handset.

Press *#06# IMEI Number checking

The Structure of an IMEI :check
IMEI numbers either come in a 15 digit or 17 digit sequences of numbers. The IMEI format currently used as AA-BBBBBB-CCCCCC-D. AA: These two digits are for the Reporting Body Identifier, indicating the GSMA approved group that allocated the TAC (Type Allocation Code). BBBBBB: The remainder of the TAC. CCCCCC: Serial sequence of the Model. D: Luhn check digit of the entire model or 0 (This is an algorithm that validates the ID number).

IMEI Number Verification :

If your Chinese handset is showing an unique IMEI number, it is important to validate that it is an unique IMEI number and not a cloned or duplicate IMEI number because recently many local Chinese firms sent millions of cheap mobiles in India with duplicate or cloned IMEI number which are also equally invalid as per international and Indian laws. No IMEI number or duplicate IMEI number, people can use a service started by Mobile Standards Alliance of India (Govt. Approved) to provide valid and unique IMEI to all such handsets by paying just Rs 199. After getting new IMEI number, any person can use such handsets for as long as he wants. People can get the list of all available authorized service centers in their area by visiting this link http://www.msai.in/listofcentre.php.

+9, 11 digit new mobile phone number from January

9 adding to all mobile phone numbers from January...11 digits
DoT has amended the National Numbering Plan 2003 for migration to an 11-digit numbering plan in mobile services by prefixing the number ‘9’ to the existing two-digit PLMN Access Code. More than 480 million subscribers of mobile telephony services will have 11-digit number from January 1 2010. The subscribers will have to prefix 9 to the existing 10-digit number. For example, a number 9xxxxxxxxx will become 99xxxxxxxxx. The Department of telecommunications (DoT) issued a notice to all telecom service providers on Tuesday, informing the change in the plan. The change in numbering system is due to increase in the number of subscribers. This is also due to increase in the number of service providers. This is not the first time phone numbers will be modified. A few years ago, the government had prefixed the number ‘2’ to all BSNL and MTNL fixed-line land phones across the country to accommodate more connections.

Google's mobile operating system - Android OS - is very impressive and is the only one which can come close to the iPhone OS in terms of usability but has so far been restricted to high end mobile devices, with no phone yet under the 20k mark. However, HTC's new Tattoo intends to change that by being the first sub-20k Android phone that packs nearly as many features as its older brothers. This means you get almost the same Android experience but now at a more affordable price.

But lower price is not just the main feature of the Tattoo. The phone's special rear cover, with its unique pattern, is reason for it being named 'Tattoo'. But the best part is that you can have the rear covers engraved with a pattern of your choice. So what more does this phone have to offer. Read on to find out.

After the Xperia X1, Sony Ericsson did not come out with a new touchscreen phone for quite some time. Last year, however, they announced two new phones, the Aino and the Satio (back then called the Idou), both of which had impressive spec sheets (especially the latter) and were poised to bring the company back on track in the ever growing touchscreen phone market.

The Satio is pretty loaded phone and represents a couple of firsts for Sony Ericsson. It is the first phone from the company with a 12.2 megapixel camera and also the first to run the S60 operating system. But will this phone be able to stand up to the tough competition? After being present in the mobile phone industry as just a software manufacturer, Google has finally decided to take the plunge and make its first very own mobile phone to compete with the likes of Nokia, Samsung, Apple and BlackBerry. Its weapon of choice? The Nexus One. Manufactured by HTC for Google, the Nexus One has, by far, one of the most impressive specifications list you can find in a smartphone. Or should I call it Superphone, as Google does. The Nexus One comes armed with Qualcomm's finest 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch, 800 x 480 pixel AMOLED display, a 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and runs on the latest and greatest Android 2.1 operating system.

Although the Nexus One is so far only sold in U.S., we managed to get our hands on one sample in India, which was bought from U.S. We spent some time with the Nexus One and this is what we have to say about it.

    Acer neoTouch

We reviewed it and thought it could have been a lot better

Large, high resolution display, powerful 1GHz Snapdragon processor, good connectivity features, Flash support in browser

Poor Bundle, design attracts fingerprints and scratches, minimal UI customization done by Acer, average audio quality, poor quality loudspeaker, no Java application support, no DivX/XviD support, no pre-installed navigation software, expensive

Acer phones that we received in the past weren't particularly good and had nothing great to offer, especially when compared with the competition, who are really fighting tooth and nail. Phones by Acer seemed to be a halfhearted attempt by the manufacturer. Today, we have the Acer neoTouch with us which seems to be more in touch with the competition around it and Acer has equipped it accordingly. For starters, there is the blazing fast 1GHz Snapdragon processor, which is currently the fastest processor on mobile phones. The neoTouch also has a large high resolution touchscreen display. It also comes with the full range of connectivity features and runs on Windows Mobile 6.5. Let us see how this one performs.

The bundle of the phone was rather disappointing. We did not find any memory card in the package and the neoTouch doesn't exactly come with a large amount of memory built-in. There was also not any TV-out cable, something that you always find on high-end Nokia phones. There was also no carry case for the phone and the provided headset was also of average quality.
